Americans for Prosperity Releases Statement on Whitmer Veto to End Federal Jobless Benefits

Jul 21, 2021 by AFP

Lansing, MI –– Americans for Prosperity – Michigan (AFP-MI) released a statement today after Governor Gretchen Whitmer vetoed legislation designed to end early the federal government’s $300-a-week unemployment insurance (UI) kicker.

The bill, HB 4434, would not have ended the additional benefit prior to the benefit’s scheduled Sept. 5 end date. Rather, the bill would not have gone into effect until 2022.

AFP-MI State Director Annie Patnaude issued the following statement:

“As Michigan continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, we need policies that boost our workforce and help families and our economy recover – not policies that incentivize folks to stay at home. While Governor Whittmer responded to the pandemic with the heavy handed stick of government restrictions, this was a missed opportunity to correct course and trust our legislators, empower our workers, and help our small businesses recover stronger.”
