AFP Statement on the Passage of the Kigali Amendment

Arlington, VA – Today, the Senate 69-27 voted in favor of ratifying the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Americans for Prosperity issued the following statement:

“This United Nations treaty provision will impose costly restrictions that effectively create a consumer tax on air conditioning and refrigeration. It will give an unfair industrial advantage to China, a country classified as a ‘developing nation’ under the terms of the treaty, and subsidize its compliance with U.S. taxpayer funds.

“It has ceded U.S. sovereignty over environmental regulation to the United Nations and has rolled out the red carpet for future binding treaties to further encroach on large sectors of the U.S. economy, stifling the American-led innovation which has always been the catalyst for prosperity and a cleaner environment.

“The senators who voted to ratify this amendment have shown that they are complicit in growing the true cost of Washington, which will fall squarely on American families and businesses.”
