AFP-PA Responds to State Budget

Harrisburg, Pa. – Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania (AFP-PA) on Friday commented on the $32.7 billion budget passed by the state legislature. The 2018-2019 budget is expected to be signed by Governor Wolf in the coming days.

The grassroots group on Tuesday issued a letter to state lawmakers listing key reforms that if enacted would provide Pennsylvania’s economy a much-needed boost. AFP-PA encouraged lawmakers to embrace the 2018-2019 budget as an opportunity to demonstrate to their constituents a commitment to fiscal discipline and long-term economic prosperity.

AFP-PA State Director Beth Anne Mumford issued the following statement:

“We applaud lawmakers for advancing a budget that doesn’t include tax hikes and increases Educational Improvement Tax Credit funding to expand educational opportunities for families, but we are much less impressed with the accounting sleight-of-hand that permeates this budget.

“Borrowing in the previous fiscal year creates the illusion of balanced finances that must be accounted for eventually. Making budget deficits disappear through borrowing and accounting tricks instead of enacting meaningful reforms is a disservice to taxpayers who know that wasteful spending drives new taxes and more borrowing down the road.”
