Columbia, SC—With the late-session passage of H. 4216 by the House, Americans for Prosperity-South Carolina (AFP-SC) is applauding the monumental progress the legislature has made to phase out the state income tax. While the final moments of session do not provide time for the Senate to act, AFP-SC is calling on the Senate to pass H. 4216 and ensure an immediate tax break is given to hardworking families and revisit other improvements to the tax code next session.
AFP-SC’s grassroots activists have connected with voters and lawmakers throughout the community, calling for long-lasting, pro-growth reforms to be made to the state’s tax code that currently make it far less competitive than its neighbors. The state efforts compliment the federal tax break AFP-SC is advocating for with the renewal of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act which saves the average South Carolina family $2,199 a year.
AFP-SC State Director, Matt Humm, made the following statement:
“A major pillar of AFP-SC’s Freedom Initiative is one step closer to passing, and we’re eager for the Senate to have the opportunity to send this bill to the Governor’s desk. A future without a state income tax is on the horizon for South Carolina and now is the time to deliver for hardworking families who must see more of their income saved, not sent to government. Simplifying and flattening our tax code until it is fully phased out will make us more competitive in the region, ensuring South Carolina remains a great place to work, live, and raise a family.”
