ARLINGTON, VA — Americans for Prosperity CEO Emily Seidel released the following statement in response to tonight’s State of the Union Address:

“This evening, President Trump outlined a number of significant accomplishments that have helped to change the trajectory of our country, slow inflation, and put more money in Americans’ pockets. We were proud to do our part to help advance The Working Families Tax Cut to the President’s desk. That historic piece of legislation was essential, and we will continue to connect people to its benefits.

“We were also glad to hear that the President isn’t ready to stop productive policy-making this year. The American people have been clear: they want Congress to act urgently to drive solutions, continue to bring down costs, and advance reforms that provide both immediate relief and long-term benefits.

“As a grassroots organization, we listen to the American people and empower them to act. AFP has knocked on more than 4 million doors since the President took office, and combined with our polling, we can say with confidence that the President outlined elements of an agenda that would tackle real problems and resonate deeply with Americans. Specifically, proposals to modernize energy regulations to drive more reliable and affordable energy, health care reforms to increase benefit portability and expand access to providers, and a commitment to rein in waste, fraud and abuse.

“The midterm elections shouldn’t be an excuse to do nothing. They should be a reason to act fast on issues where there is broad public consensus. After all, good policy makes good politics.

“But the reverse is also true. That’s why we also need a robust and respectful public debate on tough issues that don’t have as clear of a path forward. That is the role of Congress, who can then be held accountable by their constituents.

“With the right policies, we can unlock more energy, more health care options, and more opportunity—and deliver the lower costs and greater prosperity Americans are demanding. We’re committed to get to work delivering real results to turn those possibilities into reality.”
