ICYMI: MN Star Tribune op-ed: Housing reform leaders demand lawmakers legalize ‘missing middle’ starter homes

Americans for Prosperity Press Release

ST. PAUL, MN – In case you missed it, Americans for Prosperity-Minnesota (AFP-MN) State Director Jake Coleman and Minnesota Housing Partnership Executive Director Anne Mavity have a new joint op-ed in the Minnesota Star Tribune urging the state legislature to pass a major housing reform bill before the 2026 legislative session ends.

Coleman and Mavity argue that The Minnesota Starter Homes Act (HF 3895) will help address the state’s housing affordability crisis by removing the outdated zoning regulations that prohibit building “the homes once common to small towns and big cities alike — homes above shops along Main Street, duplexes and townhouses, and backyard cottages” that regular people can afford.

The op-ed comes AFP-MN, the Minnesota Housing Partnership, and other groups in the “Yes to Homes” coalition, are pushing lawmakers to advance the bill in the coming weeks after they recently left it to languish in a committee meeting.

Excerpt from the op-ed below:

“If we want to protect the American dream for Minnesotans, the Legislature needs to get serious about the housing shortage. The Starter Homes Act is the first step toward building a future where our families and future generations of Minnesotans can live and thrive.”
