ICYMI from Bloomberg — Americans for Prosperity Enters Lobbying Fight to Kill Jones Act

ARLINGTON, VA— As policymakers consider next steps following President Trump’s temporary suspension of the Jones Act amid Iran War-driven price spikes, AFP is urging Congress to seize this opportunity to permanently repeal the outdated shipping law—lowering costs for American families and strengthening U.S. energy security.

From the article:

Americans for Prosperity has officially lobbied the House and Senate to approve pending legislation (S. 2043) introduced by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) to revoke the 1920 Jones Act, which requires that US-made vessels transport cargo between domestic ports, according to new filings. The group spent $700,000 in the first three months of the year to sway lawmakers on several issues, according to the filing.

“With cost-of-living top of mind for families across the country, President Trump’s temporary suspension underscores exactly why this outdated, protectionist law should be lifted,” Bill Riggs, a spokesperson for the group, said in a statement. “Permanently repealing the Jones Act would eliminate unnecessary red tape, strengthen energy security, and provide real, lasting relief for consumers.”

Americans for Prosperity has long opposed the Jones Act because it drives up the cost of energy and everyday goods by restricting competition and making some things virtually impossible to ship. The recent suspension should be a wake-up call that the Jones Act hurts America’s economy and should never be reinstated.
