ATLANTA, GA – Today, following the start of the 2024 Georgia General Assembly, Americans for Prosperity – Georgia (AFP-GA) is urging lawmakers to champion pivotal policy reforms that will make Georgia the best place to live, work, and raise a family, including a full repeal of Certificate of Need laws and passing education reform that will benefit all students.
AFP-GA State Director Tony West released the following statement:
“As we kick off the 2024 General Assembly, we are excited to continue building off our momentum from the last legislative session and our grassroots engagement efforts.
“There are a number of important legislative policy issues that will be at the forefront of AFP-GA’s efforts this session. From a full repeal of our state’s burdensome Certificate of Need laws to improving education for students, AFP-GA will continue to be an influential voice that encourages lawmakers to pass legislation that enables all Georgians to reignite their American dream.”
Background
Throughout last year, AFP-GA played an important grassroots role across the state in a variety of policy issues:
- In November, the Senate Study Committee on Certificate of Need Reform recommended a full repeal of Certificate of Need laws. AFP-GA had representatives at both House and Senate Study Committee meetings throughout the state.
- In August, AFP-GA hosted a press conference in Augusta that featured testimony from Katie Chubb, the Executive Director of Augusta Birth Center, who is suing the state of Georgia on the status of CON regulations.
- AFP-GA State Director Tony West published an op-ed in the Albany Herald highlighting Chubb’s story and how CON laws have been detrimental.
AFP-GA also has been a leader in advocating for education reform:
- In December, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution highlighted AFP-GA’s door knocking efforts in Cobb County.
- In November, AFP-GA hosted an Education Freedom Rally with school choice leader Dr. Corey DeAngelis and State Representative Todd Jones (R-District 25), the sponsor of SB 233, the Georgia Promise Scholarship Act.
- In October, AFP-GA Grassroots Engagement Director Shane McGonigal published an op-ed in the Forsyth County News highlighting how SB 233, the Georgia Promise Scholarship, would benefit students across the state.
