COLUMBUS, OH – Americans for Prosperity-Ohio (AFP-OH) today testified before the Ohio House Medicaid Committee in support of House Bill 795, legislation aimed at strengthening oversight, increasing transparency, and preventing fraud within Ohio’s Medicaid program.
AFP-OH State Director Donovan O’Neil delivered proponent testimony, noting that AFP-OH raised concerns about Medicaid accountability more than a year ago and previously warned lawmakers about vulnerabilities in provider enrollment, spending growth, and verification systems.
“Ohio taxpayers deserve confidence that Medicaid dollars are reaching the people the program was intended to serve,” said O’Neil. “For more than a year, AFP-Ohio has called attention to the need for stronger safeguards, better oversight, and greater transparency. House Bill 795 represents an important step toward restoring accountability and protecting resources for Ohio’s most vulnerable residents.”
In testimony before the committee, AFP-OH highlighted the rapid growth of Ohio’s Medicaid program and argued that stronger accountability measures are necessary to ensure long-term sustainability.
AFP-OH praised the bill’s provisions to strengthen provider enrollment standards, expand Electronic Visit Verification requirements, improve fraud detection tools, increase transparency, and enhance the Auditor of State’s ability to investigate potential abuse.
“Every dollar lost to fraud, waste, or abuse is a dollar that cannot support seniors, individuals with disabilities, and families who genuinely rely on these services,” O’Neil said. “Reforming this program is how advocates of this program protect it.”
As lawmakers continue considering Medicaid reforms, AFP-OH will host a grassroots rally at the Ohio Statehouse on June 9 to highlight the importance of transparency, accountability, and long-term sustainability within the program.
“Ohioans want a government that is accountable to taxpayers and focused on delivering results,” O’Neil added. “We look forward to continuing this conversation with lawmakers and citizens who believe Medicaid should work for the people it was created to serve.”
