TOPEKA, KS – Americans for Prosperity-Kansas (AFP-KS) celebrated the state Senate’s passage of the “Home Ownership Made Easier (H.O.M.E.) Act on Wednesday, praising the legislation as an effective free-market reform that will help solve Kansas’ housing crisis.

The new legislation (S.B. 418) would allow for by-right development across the state, streamlining the approval process for proposed projects that are already in compliance with existing regulations. AFP-KS will continue to advocate for additional legislation that reduces or eliminates exclusionary zoning across Kansas.

AFP-KS Deputy State Director Tanner Tempel released the following statement:

“The H.O.M.E. Act is a critical first step in addressing the skyrocketing costs and low availability facing Kansas home buyers. Owning a home is a crucial pathway to the American Dream. This legislation will create a more diverse housing stock that will help new generations of Kansans climb the economic ladder and move where the opportunities are.

“Our state government had created an artificial housing shortage by creating layers of red tape for every new housing project. Now, we’re solving it by letting developers build in the places where people want to live.

“AFP-KS thanks Senators TJ Rose and Ty Masterson for their leadership on this legislation and call on the House and Governor Kelly to move swiftly to make this bill into law. We urge the legislature to continue removing outdated zoning practices and regulatory barriers so that Kansas can become a more attractive place to live, work, and raise a family.”
