ARLINGTON, VA— Americans for Prosperity applauds the additional commitments to transparency, accountability, and responsible immigration enforcement laid out by the White House in their recent letter to Congress. These measures reflect an important recognition that enforcing the law and protecting individual rights must go hand in hand.
“Democrats in the Senate have put the safety and security of Americans at risk for too long,” said AFP Chief Government Affairs Officer Brent Gardner. “Now is the time to end this dangerous political stunt. These shutdown tactics are irresponsible and reckless, regardless of issue or political Party, and they should be taken off the table entirely.”
“Transparency and accountability are essential to building trust in our immigration system,” Gardner continued. “The commitments by the White House represent a good-faith step forward that should end this crisis immediately.”
Requiring Department of Homeland Security officers engaged in immigration enforcement to wear clearly visible identification and provide it upon request is a commonsense step that promotes trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Expanding the use of body cameras, ensuring footage is retained, and strengthening congressional oversight are similarly important reforms that will help provide transparency and reinforce accountability across the system.
We also support the reaffirmation of policies limiting enforcement actions at sensitive locations—such as schools, churches, and hospitals—except in cases involving serious public safety or national security concerns. Maintaining these guardrails is critical to ensuring that enforcement actions are conducted in a targeted and responsible manner.
Finally, the administration’s emphasis that U.S. citizens should not be wrongfully detained or deported—and that enforcement actions must remain focused on individuals who have committed eligible crimes—underscores the importance of due process and the rule of law.
Taken together, the commitments outlined in this letter largely reinforce existing standards while signaling a willingness to improve transparency and oversight. Americans for Prosperity supports this approach and continues to urge Democrats to end this reckless shutdown that risks Americans’ safety at a time of heightened security concerns.
