ARLINGTON, VA — Americans for Prosperity (AFP) announced today it is launching a new digital advertising campaign to hold Democrats accountable for refusing to vote in favor of legislation that would reopen the government and fully fund the Department of Homeland Security.
The digital and television campaign, which will run in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, and Virginia focusing on Senators Kelly, Ossoff, Peters, and Kaine, aims to ensure voters understand who is responsible for prolonging the shutdown and blocking funding for agencies tasked with protecting the homeland. AFP said the effort is focused on bringing transparency and accountability to lawmakers who are choosing political brinkmanship over public safety.
AFP is calling for an immediate end to the ongoing partial government shutdown amid rising security concerns across the United States and abroad, warning that continued dysfunction in Washington could prove catastrophic at a time when American families, businesses, and communities are relying on their government to keep them safe.
“As the United States faces an increasingly volatile global security environment following military strikes in Iran, ensuring the Department of Homeland Security is fully funded and fully operational should be a top priority,” said Chief Government Affairs Officer Brent Gardner. “Instead, this Democrat-driven shutdown is creating unnecessary risks while federal workers are being asked to bear the cost. Refusing to fund DHS at a time like this isn’t just misguided—it’s a reckless decision that puts politics ahead of public safety.”
AFP has long opposed shutdown politics as a means to advance policy, regardless of the issue. This shutdown has disrupted services, strained federal workers, and created avoidable uncertainty in areas Americans depend on every day.
Workers at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are expected to receive only a portion of their next paycheck, as the partial government shutdown enters its second week with no resolution in sight. The reduced pay for TSA officers—who are responsible for screening millions of travelers and protecting the nation’s aviation system—raises concerns about potential staffing shortages, longer lines at airports, and avoidable security vulnerabilities. Travelers are already being encouraged to arrive as many 5 hours prior to their flight at some airports.
Disruptions to airport security operations would not only inconvenience travelers and hurt local economies but also create unnecessary risks within the nation’s transportation infrastructure.
AFP emphasized that policy disputes—no matter how serious—must be resolved through negotiation and open debate, not through brinkmanship that puts the country at risk. We urge Democrats in Congress to end the shutdown by supporting legislation that would reopen the government and provide full funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
The ads close by urging Congress to take these kind of reckless tactics off the table for good by passing the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act.
