Dear Representative,
On behalf of Americans for Prosperity’s grassroots volunteers and supporters across the nation, we urge you to oppose H. Res. 1140, the discharge petition to force floor consideration of H.R. 5408, the Faster Labor Contracts Act. We urge all members to oppose any effort to advance or pass this legislation.
The Faster Labor Contracts Act is not a reasonable or modest labor reform. It advances one of the most controversial elements of the PRO Act agenda: forced first-contract arbitration. It would establish a rushed shot clock that could prevent employees and employers from reaching mutually beneficial or financially viable contracts.
Mandating government-imposed labor contracts written by arbitration panels that may have little understanding of the workplace deprives workers of the right to even vote against a contract that undermines their jobs, wages, scheduling flexibility, workplace culture, and the productive relational aspects workers have with management.
Binding employers to contracts imposed by third-party arbitrators would also make it harder for businesses to respond to the needs of their employees and customers, instead serving to increase costs at a time when American families are concerned with the cost of living. Congress taking away the ability of workers to participate meaningfully in negotiations and reject agreements to advance the financial interests of union leaders is not pro-worker policy.
For these reasons, we urge you to oppose H. Res. 1140 and vote “NO” on H.R. 5408, the Faster Labor Contracts Act, if it reaches the floor.
