Merrimack, NH — On Wednesday, Americans for Prosperity-New Hampshire (AFP-NH) brought together education activists, state legislators, homeschool parents, and school choice advocates to discuss how the Granite State is working to expand home education freedom.
The event, entitled “Live Free and Learn,” featured Rep. Kristin Noble, Chair of House Education Policy and Administration, Rep. Erica Layon, Chair of House Executive Departments and Administration, Melissa Blasek, Executive Director for Rebuild NH, and Sarah Scott, AFP-NH Deputy State Director. Speakers discussed how New Hampshire can build on recent victories in education freedom to ensure parents—not bureaucrats—make the decisions that shape their children’s futures.
AFP-NH Deputy State Director Sarah Scott released the following statement:
“To ensure New Hampshire families can make the best educational decisions for their child, they must be equipped with options. Whether through Education Freedom Accounts, expanded open enrollment, or innovative learning models that meet individual students’ needs, parents must remain at the forefront of their children’s education decisions, not bureaucrats.
“AFP-NH will continue to mobilize our grassroots efforts and work alongside community leaders to continue to grow the Granite State’s educational innovation and opportunity and empower parents through school choice.”
Yesterday, the House rejected HB 1820, a bill that would require the NH Department of Education to administer the Education Freedom Account program, and HB 1834, a bill that would limit the number of students able to participate in the Education Freedom Accounts program to 10,000 students, regardless of income or program demand.
“The The Education Freedom Account (EFA) program has been operating efficiently for years and was able to launch significantly faster than most states that require their Department of Education to administer the program. These bills would have increased overhead costs for the program and delayed the administration of the program, which would disrupt the education of over 10,000 students who are currently in the program, and limited participation, which undermines parental empowerment and slows the progress New Hampshire has made in expanding education choice. We applaud the House for rejecting these policies that would have placed limits and undermined parental empowerment,” said Sarah Scott.
