Americans for Prosperity-VA to Ralph Northam: Where do you stand on the single-payer proposal?

Oct 3, 2017 by AFP

RICHMOND, VA – Americans for Prosperity-Virginia (AFP-VA) State Director JC Hernandez today asked Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ralph Northam to clarify his position on single-payer healthcare and whether he agrees with sitting House Speaker William J. Howell’s position that single-payer would be a mess that would expand Virginia’s budget, increase taxes, and take money away from core government services. Sixteen Virginia House of Delegates candidates recently expressed support for a single-payer plan in the Commonwealth, a tacit admission that Obamacare has failed.

AFP is asking Lt. Gov. Northam to clarify whether he would support the plan as it gathers momentum among his own party.  He has previously stated he only opposes Sen. Bernie Sanders’ single-payer plans because the country is “not ready.” Where does he stand on the policy? He’s already supported a public option that would allow millions more Americans to get on Medicare or Medicaid, which would doom the private insurance market. A government-controlled monopoly single-payer plan is the next logical step.

AFP-Virginia State Director JC Hernandez issued the following statement:

“In light of many policy shifts in Northam’s past, we want to know whether he would support a disastrous plan like this, which would necessitate enormous tax increases and divert resources from schools, roads, and other critical needs. Since it would have such a profound negative impact on millions of Virginians, voters have a right to know exactly where Northam stands on this issue. These are the kinds of ideas Northam’s legislative allies would support if he were to become governor. So does Ralph Northam support the proposal or oppose it?

“This is another example of why Virginians should vote against Northam. Even as democratic house candidates acknowledge Obamacare is failing, he’s just advocating for its expansion. He’s out of touch with Virginia and evidently the policies of his own party.”
