Un-Rigging the American Economy

Every American deserves the opportunity to pursue their passions and provide for their families, yet America’s present tax code makes it difficult for millions of Americans to get ahead.

72 percent of Americans feel that our “economy is rigged to advantage the rich and powerful.” And it is. The biggest contributor to our country’s rigged economy is the U.S. tax code.

A new policy overview released by Americans for Prosperity and Freedom Partners highlights the urgent need for comprehensive tax reform and outlines a positive vision for a fairer, flatter, simpler tax code.

Our vision for tax reform follows five simple principles:

  • SIMPLICITY: Lower rates, fewer brackets, and the elimination of special loopholes, deductions and exemptions will make tax compliance easier and more affordable.
  • EFFICIENCY: A broad-based, low-rate tax system is the most efficient way for the government to collect revenue – causing as little disruption to the economy as possible.
  • EQUITABILITY: Corporate welfare and special-interest handouts in the current tax code create an unfair, two-tiered tax system and should be eliminated.
  • PREDICTABILITY: Tax certainty is essential to a pro-growth tax system.
  • NO BURDEN ON TAXPAYERS: Comprehensive tax reform must be done without placing new burdens on the American people, whether in the form of a BAT, VAT, carbon tax, or otherwise.

Americans have suffered under an unfair, complex, and burdensome tax code which pits the least fortunate against the well-connected for too long.

The last time Congress addressed our tax laws was 1986, and since that time, “the code has grown more complex by the year, as evidenced by the fact that Congress has made more than 5,900 changes to the code—an average of more than one a day—just since 2001,” as stated by the IRS Taxpayer Advocate.

By enacting comprehensive tax reform, we can empower the American people and unleash economic growth and opportunity so that all Americans, especially the least fortunate, can improve their lives and pursue their American Dream.

Today, and in the coming months, we have a tremendous opportunity to advance tax reform. Join us as we urge lawmakers to stand with us on a positive vision for tax reform.
