LANSING, Mich.—Profanity-laced comments from members of the Michigan Education Association (MEA) teachers’ union were among the negative responses to a union opt-out education effort launched by Americans for Prosperity-Michigan. The group began educating MEA members earlier this month on their right to opt-out of union membership under Michigan’s new right-to-work law. August is the only month the MEA will allow members to opt-out.

“AFP can go tongue punch a fart box,” one educator commented. “These repugnant motherless assholes have a guaranteed place in hell,” another remarked in response to AFP-Michigan social media posts. Click here to read a sampling of comments.

“These type of disgusting comments are unwarranted, particularly when they come from people who are educating our children,” said Scott Hagerstrom, state director of Americans for Prosperity-Michigan. “Unfortunately, these remarks represent the type of bullying behavior union members often use to intimidate others who want to exercise their rights under our new workplace freedom law.” Hagerstrom noted that there were also positive responses such as, “I did it [opted out]. I was glad.”

Earlier this month, AFP-Michigan published a full-page ad in the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News notifying MEA members of their rights under Michigan’s right-to-work law. The advertisement included an opt-out letter members could clip, sign, and send in to the MEA in order to opt out of membership and union dues. Click here to view the ad.

“We have a simple message for our educators: Teachers who are sick and tired of supporting the big-government agenda advanced by their union can opt out of membership and dues,” said Hagerstrom. “Michigan’s new workplace freedom law will help keep unions accountable to the workers they are supposed to represent.”
