Dear Senators:
On behalf of more than 2.1 million Americans for Prosperity (AFP) activists in all 50 states, I write urging you to reject the Senate Democrats’ plan (S. 388) to undo planned spending reductions. This $85 billion in sequester cuts is a small but important first step toward controlling spending. The last thing Congress should do is renege on these reductions the very first year they go into effect.
I urge you to vote NO on S. 388, a bill to undo the planned spending cuts. Americans for Prosperity will include this vote in our congressional scorecard.
This legislation perpetuates the myth that Congress can simply raise taxes and continue to forego the reforms needed to control runaway government spending. One of these tax increases, the so-called Buffett Rule, would advance even more class division without even making a meaningful reduction in the deficit. This is on the heels of last month’s fiscal cliff deal that also raised taxes on high-earning households. Not only will continually raising taxes fail to generate enough revenue to close the deficit, it will have unintended secondary effects, such as slower economic growth and fewer jobs. The plan also includes a handful of other tax hikes that skirt the need for real spending reduction.
An equally objectionable part of the plan is the proposal to shift the reduced discretionary spending caps into future years. If Congress isn’t willing to cut spending now, there is little reason to believe that it will cut it in the future. Promising to make indeterminate cuts in the future is simply not acceptable.
I urge you to vote NO on S. 388, a bill to undo the planned spending cuts. Americans for Prosperity will include this vote in our congressional scorecard.
