Kansas Issues This Week: Renewable Portfolio Standards

Jan 30, 2014 by AFP

This week we announced the launch of a statewide effort to repeal the Renewable Portfolio Standard in Kansas, with statewide TV and radio ads urging Kansans to contact legislators and Gov. Brownback about repealing these costly energy mandates.

RPS mandates and the like are another example of well-intentioned policies doing more harm than good. It seems like a good idea to many to promote renewable energy sources, and in fact, there’s nothing wrong with private investments in newer energy technologies. However, when energy companies are forced to comply with government mandates, guess who ends up footing the bill? Consumers like you!

Simply put, the RPS amounts to government resources propping up one industry over the others. It’s picking winners and losers in the marketplace, and it can put an added strain on the budgets of Kansas families and businesses.
