Dear Representatives:
On behalf of more than two million Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I urge you to support Rep. Scalise’s Amendment to the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny Act (REINS), H.R. 367. This amendment would require the Administration to receive approval from Congress before implementing a carbon tax.
I urge you to vote YES on the Scalise amendment to H.R. 367, which would require Congressional approval before implementing a carbon tax. Americans for Prosperity will include this vote in our congressional scorecard.
Since nearly all of the country’s energy comes from carbon-based fuel, taxing carbon emissions would lead Americans to see higher energy costs and lower standards of living. A carbon tax would also grow government and be a huge drain on the economy. The responsibility to enact policies of this magnitude rightfully belongs to the legislative branch, not federal agencies.
Like the underlying bill, this amendment will reassert Congress’s proper role in the legislative process. This amendment will rein in an overreaching executive and brings it back within its constitutional bounds. A carbon tax should not go into effect unless Congress first votes to approve it. This would allow Americans to see whether their elected representatives supported enacting a carbon tax and hold them accountable.
I urge you to vote YES on the Scalise amendment to H.R. 367, which would require Congressional approval before implementing a carbon tax. Americans for Prosperity will include this vote in our congressional scorecard.
