House Key Vote: Support Repealing the President’s Health Care Law

May 14, 2013 by AFP

Dear Representatives:

On behalf of more than two million Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I urge you to support the bill that would repeal the Unaffordable Care Act, (H.R. 45). The longer this law is on the books and the more we learn about its operation, the clearer it becomes that passing it in the first place was a huge mistake.

I urge you to vote YES on the bill repealing the Unaffordable Care Act (H.R. 45).  Americans for Prosperity will include this vote in our congressional scorecard.

When this law was first proposed, advocates insisted that it would “only” cost $1 trillion over the next decade. But as time goes on, cost estimates for the law climb higher and higher. According to recent CBO estimates, the gross cost of the law is up to $1.68 trillion. This past month, for example, the President’s own Health and Human Services Department (HHS) reported that implementing state-based exchanges will cost more than twice of initial estimates; HHS now expects to spend $4.4 billion on implementation in 2013.

In addition, the President’s health care law includes a number of onerous tax hikes that will damage the economy, such as the 3.8 percent surtax on investment income for high earners and the 2.3 percent tax on gross sales of medical devices. The law also imposes new burdens on employers, such as requiring businesses with more than 50 full-time workers to provide affordable health insurance or pay a penalty.

A particularly concerning provision of the law is the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB). The 15 unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats who sit on this board will have the authority make binding recommendations for controlling the growth in Medicare spending, unless Congress specifically rejects them. In effect, this will put bureaucrats in between patients and their doctors, shifting control of health care decisions away from individuals and their families.

I urge you to vote YES on the bill repealing the Unaffordable Care Act (H.R. 45).  Americans for Prosperity will include this vote in our congressional scorecard.
