COLUMBIA, SC – Following last night’s passage of S. 1046 in the House by a vote of 112-6, Americans for Prosperity – South Carolina (AFP-SC) is highlighting its continued support for the bill and urging lawmakers in the Senate and House to quickly resolve the differences and send to Governor McMaster’s desk.
AFP-SC State Director, Candace Carroll, released the following statement:
“We thank the House for overwhelmingly passing S. 1046. This bipartisan bill ensures South Carolina’s judicial system is transparent, effective, and will make more qualified applicants eligible to be considered for judgeships by the legislature instead of the Judicial Merit Selection Commission controlling the process.”
Background
The Senate unanimously passed S. 1046 in March. The bill brings much needed reform to South Carolina’s judicial selection process by increasing transparency and accountability for the Judicial Merit Selection Commission (JMSC), as well as gives the state’s elected officials more voice in choosing judges. S. 1046 will now go to the Senate where legislators will finalize the differences in the bill.
