AFP-KS Slams KCC Decision to Make Energy Bills Even Higher for Kansas Ratepayers

Oct 4, 2024 by AFP

Topeka, KS—Following the decision to increase rates for Kansas Gas Service (KGS) customers, Americans for Prosperity-Kansas (AFP-KS) condemned the action sharing how hardworking Kansans are already facing a cost-of-living crisis under the Biden-Harris Administration and higher energy bills hurt their bottom-line.

AFP-KS State Director, Liz Patton, released the following statement:

“We are disappointed to see a decision to raise rates on Kansans so that Kansas Gas Service can increase their net revenue was agreed upon by the parties and approved by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC). The cost-of-living is high enough for people across the state who are paying $1,083 more a month since January 2021. It’s clear that profits were put above Kansans and AFP-KS will continue to call for more competition in the public utility space and urge our legislature to make reforms to the KCC.”

Background

Starting in June, AFP-KS emphasized to the KCC how KGS’ request puts its bottom-line above consumers and is done so with little transparency. Since the public comments opened, AFP-KS received hundreds of petition signatures through its online action form from concerned Kansans who oppose the disastrous rate increase.
