Americans for Prosperity-Virginia Reacts to House Budget Proposal

Feb 19, 2018 by AFP

Leading Grassroots group opposes Medicaid expansion in budget

Richmond, VA – Americans for Prosperity-Virginia (AFP-VA) reacted to the House of Delegates’ recently unveiled budget proposal, which includes Medicaid expansion. The group sent a letter to lawmakers expressing its disappointment in the proposal. The group deems the proposal to be irresponsible and lacking in conservative principle. AFP-VA has consistently opposed expanding Medicaid as it surpasses the proper role of government. Instead, the group supports bold healthcare reforms that focus on expanding access to quality healthcare for more Virginians, not simply giving them a Medicaid insurance card and calling it coverage.

“On behalf of 100,000 activists, we are shocked and extremely disappointed by the House’s capitulation on Medicaid expansion. Including Medicaid expansion in the budget is both fiscally and morally irresponsible,”  said AFP-VA State Director JC Hernandez. “Despite the claims made by some delegates, expanding a broken and costly program is far from conservative. Virginians deserve better. Any way you look at it, Medicaid expansion puts taxpayers at risk. It ruins state budgets and leads to lower quality health care. We remain steadfast in our opposition to Obamacare Medicaid expansion in Virginia and are deeply disappointed in the House’s failure of a budget.”

Background:

JC Hernandez recently wrote an op-ed in the Richmond Times Dispatch that discussed ways to improve healthcare access in Virginia without expanding Medicaid.
