Grassroots group supports unified framework – urges Donnelly to support passage this year

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Americans for Prosperity-Indiana (AFP-IN) today announced a seven-figure ad buy as the grassroots organization expands its effort to urge Senator Joe Donnelly to unrig the economy by unifying around the tax reform framework recently released by the “Big 6.” The TV ad is part of a larger $4.5 million ad buy that will also call out Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin and Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill. The ad will run on cable and local networks for three weeks starting Friday.

“Donnelly has repeatedly said he’s willing to work with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to get a tax code that is fair, efficient, and encourages businesses to invest here at home, so this framework deserves his full endorsement immediately,” said AFP-IN Director Justin Stevens. “Hoosiers have a real appetite to unrig the economy through tax reform, and our activists are ready to make sure that Senator Donnelly does not get in the way.”

The ad features a single woman addressing the viewer directly, and is designed to stand out due to its simplicity and direct message. The message is delivered straight to camera, with a matter-of-fact description of how tax reform would help unrig the economy by closing loopholes, lowering rates, and providing relief to hard-working American families:

People are sick of politics. I am too. But fixing our broken tax system isn’t about politics – it’s about helping people.

It means the powerful, the well-connected, the politicians — they’ll stop benefiting from a rigged system.

It means everyday Americans will have more to spend on what’s important to them.

That’s what tax reform will do. So, what’s stopping us?

This ad supplements AFP’s ongoing multi-million-dollar effort to advance tax reform, and comes on the heels of a summer of grassroots action in which AFP held more than 70 events reaching over 10,000 people across its 36 state chapters focused on facilitating discussions about the need to unrig the economy through comprehensive tax form.

AFP will host a conference call for members of the media on Thursday, October 5, at 12:00pm to discuss the new ads as well as the organization’s broader efforts to unrig the economy through tax reform. AFP President Tim Phillips, AFP-IN State Director Justin Stevens, AFP-WI State Director Eric Bott, and AFP-MO State Director Jeremy Cady will be available for comment.

Last week, AFP’s state leadership took to Washington to meet with lawmakers and amplify the voice of grassroots activists who support the vision for pro-growth tax reform outlined by the White House and Members of Congress. The group’s 36 state directors held a press conference on Capitol Hill highlighting the impact of AFP’s permanent grassroots infrastructure and attended a briefing from Trump administration officials on the tax reform framework.

AFP-IN has for months been urging Indiana’s federal congressional delegation to support tax reform through digital ads, phone banking, canvassing, and events. In August, hundreds attended a series of tax reform panel discussions AFP-IN hosted in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne that featured Rep. Trey Hollingsworth and Rep. Jim Banks.

AFP-IN will be continuing its expansive grassroots effort in the state to convince Senator Joe Donnelly to stand by his calls for tax reform and take advantage of this once-in-a-generation opportunity to unrig the tax code by passing pro-growth tax reform by the end of the year.

This year, Joe Donnelly has been calling for some of the same reforms AFP supports. “Hoosiers deserve a tax code that is fair, efficient, and encourages businesses to invest here at home,” his website reads. Donnelly says he will “work with members on both sides of the aisle to develop a tax code that is fair and encourages economic growth.” Now’s his chance to make good on that promise and un-rig the American economy.
