WASHINGTON-The free-market grassroots group Americans for Prosperity (AFP) today applauded U.S. Representative Charles Boustany (LA-3) for signing the group’s “No Climate Tax Pledge.” By doing so, Boustany joins over 200 lawmakers on the federal, state and local levels pledging to “oppose legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in government revenue.” Boustany also joins fellow Louisiana signers Senators David Vitter, Bill Cassidy and U.S. Representatives John Fleming (LA-4) and Steve Scalise (LA-1).
“The one thing elected officials should be able to agree on is that global warming shouldn’t be used as an excuse to hike taxes on citizens and businesses. We encourage all of Louisiana’s elected officials and candidates for elected office to sign the pledge,” says AFP Federal Affairs and Strategic Initiatives Director Christine Harbin.
Today we are seeing new costly energy requirements coming out of Washington that are saddling Americans with higher electricity bills. The President has made no secret that he will use whatever tools necessary- including bypassing the legislative process- to pass costly regulations and punitive measures like a carbon tax that threaten to kill jobs and bankrupt businesses. The U.S. energy sector has never been more productive in delivering affordable energy than it is today and yet the President and allies are determined to stop it. Independent analysis shows that a carbon tax would amount to the largest tax increase in American history. This is not what America needs as its citizens continue to struggle to make ends meet in the down economy.
“Using the guise of climate change to transfer dollars from hard-working citizens to bureaucratic big government is unacceptable,” said Harbin. “That should be common ground for all of our elected officials at all levels of government.”
The pledge is available online at www.NoClimateTax.com. AFP does not endorse candidates. All elected officials and candidates are encouraged to sign the pledge and go on the record in opposition to using the climate change issue to increase taxes and grow the size of government.
