Americans for Prosperity Says “Mediscam Junior” Plan Submitted by Governor Hassan Threatens Future State Budgets

CONCORD – Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today pointed to announcement by Governor Hassan that the state has submitted a waiver to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to attempt to get additional federal funding to pay for state programs as setting the state’s future budgets in jeopardy.  Currently, the state is scrambling to fix problems in the state’s existing scheme to access federal dollars, which consists of the Medicaid Enhancement Tax (MET) and the Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) program.

“As the state is currently floundering around to fix the broken original Mediscam program, Governor Hassan is trumpeting her support for Mediscam Junior,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director.  “The lack of respect for state leaders for federal taxpayers is not only appalling, but also irresponsible.  Just as the feds have consistently attempted to undercut our MET and DSH programs now, there is no doubt that they will do the same once a fiscally responsible administration takes over in Washington.  When that happens, our state budget will be set up to fail, and we will likely see huge tax hikes or cuts to important programs to compensate for the current reckless leadership we see now at the state and national level.”
