Americans for Prosperity Says Gas Tax Increase Supporters Will Be Held Accountable By New Hampshire Citizens

Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today held a protest at the Mr. Gas gas station in Hooksett to highlight the 23% increase in the state’s gas and diesel tax that will start at midnight.  AFP-NH Honorary Chairman Tom Thomson spoke about the impact that the tax hike will have on the citizens of New Hampshire.

“The power to tax is the power to destroy,” said Thomson.  “This new gas and diesel tax hike at best damages the New Hampshire Advantage and at worst will mean that people will suffer and businesses will close, which will cost us jobs and undercut our economy.  Not only will this mean higher prices at the pump, but it will also mean higher costs for goods, which are all shipped by trucks that will have higher transportation costs.”

AFP-NH pointed out that the public will hold gas tax hike supporters accountable for the increase.

“When the citizens of the state fill up their tanks and see that they are paying nearly $4 a gallon for gas, they will remember the individuals who hit them with a 23% gas tax increase,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director.  “Across the state, we have heard numerous complaints that this is exactly the wrong time – with gas at a 6 year high – to have a major hike on the tax for gas and diesel.  With a struggling economy and working families under real stress as wages aren’t growing, the hit that these folks will feel in their wallets will mean that they are ready to send a message to those officials who put this burden on them.  We need responsible leadership in Concord, not people who are simply looking to grow government.”
