Americans for Prosperity Says $79K Door in State House While State Budget Falters Shows Lack of Fiscal Discipline by Governor Hassan

MANCHESTER – Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today says that a $79,000 door being installed in the State House at a time when state revenues have missed targets by $25 million over the past two months and Governor Hassan requested a ban on out of state travel and hiring show a lack of fiscal discipline on the part of the Governor.

“When state revenues have missed their targets by $25 million over the past two months, and the Governor suggested that budget situation is so dire that there needed to be a ban on hiring and travel, there is no way she ever should have put an item for a gold-plated State House door on the agenda for the Governor and Council,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director.  “State House Room 100 has managed to survive for decades with its existing door and could probably hold off on having a new door added until we are not having a state budget that’s coming apart at the seams.  This is a sign of a Governor who is dramatically out of touch with what’s going on in her own agencies.  It’s no wonder that credit rating agencies are nervous about our state’s long-term financial future.”

AFP-NH said Governor Hassan needs to stop sending mixed messages on managing the state budget.

“At the same time Governor Hassan is saying the budget is so bad that we need to put department spending controls in place, she’s refuses to call for putting the budget surplus into the Rainy Day Fund and puts $79,000 doors on the Executive Council agenda,” added Moore.  “Moreover, she has delayed an important part of the Medicaid managed care contract that would save millions of dollars.  It’s clear that she is not serious about shoring up our state’s fiscal picture and she is sending inconsistent messages to state agency heads.  We need strong and consistent fiscal leadership that cares as much about the state’s funds as the hardworking taxpayers did who have to pay these bills.”
