Group encourages teachers’ union members to grow workplace freedom and their paycheck by opting out of union membership

LANSING, Mich.—Kicking off National Employee Freedom Week, Americans for Prosperity-Michigan is educating members of the Michigan Education Association (MEA) teachers’ union on how they can opt out of membership during the month of August. It is the only month during which the MEA will allow members to do so. “Want out of the MEA?” AFP-Michigan’s full-page ad in the Detroit Free Press asks. “Here’s the door.” The advertisement includes an opt-out letter members can clip, sign, and send in to the MEA in order to opt out of membership and union dues. “Teachers who are sick and tired of supporting the big-government agenda advanced by the MEA can grow workplace freedom and their paychecks by opting out of membership and dues,” said Scott Hagerstrom, state director of Americans for Prosperity-Michigan. “We’re educating our educators – under Michigan’s new right-to-work law, no one can be forced to pay dues to a union in order to keep their job.”

Americans for Prosperity-Michigan was instrumental in the passage of Michigan’s right-to-work law. The group says helping union members exercise their new rights by opting out of union dues is the next step in the fight for workplace freedom.

The MEA will only let members opt out during the month of August. AFP-Michigan says opting out is as easy as mailing in a letter to the MEA (certified mail is best). Teachers who are still under a contract passed prior to right-to-work enactment can still exercise their right to opt out of dues and only pay a non-member fee.

“All too often, in pursuit of playing politics, union bosses lose sight of their primary responsibility to represent their members,” said Hagerstrom. “Michigan’s new workplace freedom law will help keep unions accountable to the workers they are supposed to represent. We are excited to educate teachers and other union members of their new workplace freedom rights.”

Americans for Prosperity-Michigan is a statewide organization of more than 90,000 activists committed to strengthening our constitutional government, establishing fiscal restraint, and giving taxpayers greater control over government.
