MANCHESTER – Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today offered the following comments on Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s call, at a press event in Windham, for growing transportation spending on the same day that New Hampshire increased its tax on gas and diesel by 23%. Last month, Sen. Shaheen called for an increase in the federal gas tax as a way to increase funding, according to the Portsmouth Herald.
“As an advocate for raising the federal gas tax, Senator Shaheen is showing a huge disregard for the citizens of New Hampshire, who are already struggling with high gas prices and a 23% increase in the state gas tax starting today,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director. “With the cost of gasoline at a 6 year high and approaching $4 per gallon, one has to wonder if she is completely tone deaf for the impact her proposed federal gas tax would have on Granite State residents. She should be leading efforts to deliver more efficient use of highway dollars nationally, not just simply trying to reach deeper into the pockets of the taxpayers. Our drivers are looking for help and all Senator Shaheen is giving them is more pain at the pump.”
