WINDHAM – Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH) called out Governor Maggie Hassan for today’s signing of Senate Bill 367, legislation to increase the state’s gas and diesel tax by 23%.
“With gas prices at $3.61 for regular and diesel at $3.91 per gallon, the working families of New Hampshire are being crushed when they fill up their tanks,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director. “However, instead of looking for ways to help the struggling middle class, Governor Hassan instead chose to inflict more pain at the pump with a 23% gas tax hike. Moreover, as the summer driving season drives up the cost of gas and diesel, this couldn’t have come at a worse time. When it came time to help our citizens who are besieged with wages that aren’t growing, the Governor turned her back on them. It’s a real shame.”
AFP-NH has consistently called for the state to ensure that the existing 18 cent per gallon gas tax be used for road maintenance and upgrades, when today 6 cents are used for non-road purposes.
“Instead of dumping more dollars from the wallets of hard-working New Hampshire taxpayers into the leaky bucket of the Highway Fund, Governor Hassan instead chose to encourage more bad behavior by the legislature to use gas tax dollars for other purposes,” added Moore. “Just last week, the House passed a bill to allow the Fish and Game agency to tap into the Highway Fund, drilling one more hole in the bucket. If, after signing this massive gas tax hike, she also signs that bill, she will have demonstrated the hypocrisy that has led to the so-called ‘crisis’ the state faces now.”
