Missouri Businesses and Residents Asked to Participate in Regulatory Reform Discussion

St. Louis – Americans for Prosperity – Missouri last week applauded Speaker Tim Jones for the state House’s creation of the Bipartisan Investigatory Committee on Regulatory Overreach. The Committee will look into ways to reduce the state’s heavy regulatory burden on its citizens. In an attempt to jump-start this effort, this week, AFP-MO unveiled its online form at where Missouri residents can submit ideas that would reduce, streamline, and/or eliminate state or federal rules and regulations prohibiting MO from long term growth and job creation.

“Speaker Jones has taken a critical first step towards needed regulatory reform by establishing this bipartisan committee. While Missouri lacks vision and leadership from Governor Nixon, leaders in the Missouri General Assembly are looking to other states that are implementing free market reforms and creating long-term job growth.  Governor Scott of Florida signed an Executive Order in 2011 that streamlined, simplified, and eliminated thousands of rules and regulations stifling Florida businesses and families. Americans for Prosperity applauds Speaker Jones for starting the process in Missouri and would like to encourage Missouri residents to submit their stories on state and federal regulatory overreach in Missouri,” explained Patrick Werner, Missouri state director of Americans for Prosperity.

Here are a couple of examples already submitted for the Committee to review:

  • Electrical Licensing Reform
  • Local municipalities requiring a permit to have a garage sale or lemonade stands
  • Occupational licensing boards overreach by:
    • The MO Veterinary Medical Board as it relates to horse dentistry
    • The Board of Cosmetology not allowing African Hair Braiders
    • The MO Real Estate Commission preventing a group of young mothers helping people find quality apartments.
  • Streamline Food Handlers Permits
  • “Going out of business sales” required to notify the Attorney General
