Group launches scorecard and digital campaign to enhance legislative transparency, thank lawmakers who took principled policy positions
CHARLESTON, W.Va.— Americans for Prosperity-West Virginia (AFP-WV) on Wednesday released its annual legislative scorecard and announced a supplementary digital ad campaign highlighting lawmakers’ votes. The scorecard lets citizens know how their lawmakers voted on some of the most important issues in the 2020 legislative session.
This year’s robust digital ad effort will thank legislators who sponsored key bills and highlight certain lawmakers who supported important reforms in the policy areas of fiscal responsibility, free speech, criminal justice reform, and health care.
The ad campaign reconnects West Virginians with the legislative process and pushes legislators to stand up for policies that will help to make West Virginia a better place to live, work, and raise a family.
AFP-WV State Director Jason Huffman released the following statement:
“Government and elected officials need be transparent and accountable to the people. Our annual scorecard and digital efforts allow every West Virginian to pay attention to what’s happening in Charleston, so they can hold lawmakers accountable for their actions, helping accomplish lasting policy changes now and in the future.
“West Virginians deserve better than politics as usual. That’s why AFP is proud to empower every West Virginian to take on the status quo. We’re working closely with principled lawmakers to unite folks around proven policy solutions that address our state’s biggest issues. Our scorecard marks the progress we’ve made together and helps inform where we can improve next legislative session.”
The 2020 West Virginia Legislative Scorecard provides an in-depth look at the legislation used to score legislators and can be viewed at wvscorecard.com.
In 2018 AFP-WV launched the Pathway to Prosperity, a policy roadmap that prioritizes opportunity and growth for all West Virginians, which guided the group’s efforts through the legislative session. The 2020 Legislative Scorecard is a summary of what AFP’s activists were able to accomplish in pursuit of those principles.
Votes included in the 2020 Legislative Scorecard were announced to lawmakers through key vote alerts.
Every year, AFP-WV releases an updated version of our Path to Prosperity Legislative Agenda. The Path to Prosperity is a comprehensive policy agenda that serves as a roadmap for policymakers. It embodies the bottom up solutions that will change the state’s status quo and help our fellow Mountaineers reach their full potential. The policy agenda seeks to elevate and amplify voices of West Virginians across the state who want to remove the barriers that are holding them back.
AFP works with legislative leaders of both parties to enact much-needed reforms we outline in the Path to Prosperity. When these polices are up for a vote in committee or on the floor, the group sends a Key Vote Alert to every member of the legislature indicating our support for the bill. In some instances, AFP asks lawmakers to vote against legislation that will be detrimental for creating the conditions of a new and stronger West Virginia.
