AFP Wisconsin Reacts to Scope of Tax Increases Needed to Meet #JustTaxIt Coalition Spending Goals

Senators Duey Stroebel and Chris Kapenga released a Legislative Fiscal Bureau memo detailing monumental tax increase needed to support spending plan.

MADISON – Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin’s state director Eric Bott is responding to a report released by Senators Chris Kapenga and Duey Stroebel highlighting the massive tax increase necessary to fulfill the spending priorities of road builders, trades unions, and other members of the #JustTaxIt coalition. Per the memo, Wisconsin would have to increase its current gasoline excise tax by 91% or $0.281/gallon, without additional bonding, to meet the goals of #JustTaxIt. AFP says the legislature should instead heed the Senators’ call for reforms and cost cutting measures to make transportation dollars go further.

“The LFB memo shows that meeting the #JustTaxIt coalition’s spending goals would place a crushing financial burden on Wisconsin,” said Bott. “Working families and small businesses can’t afford such large tax hikes. If the #JustTaxIt groups have a plan in mind other than hiking taxes 91%, they should come public with it sooner rather than later. Until then, we will continue to work to advance a budget that prioritizes safety and maintenance and reforms government to reduce costs on working families.”
