AFP Urges Rejection of “Fiscally Irresponsible” Family Planning Bills
TRENTON – Americans for Prosperity, the state’s leading advocate for economic and health care freedom, is urging lawmakers to reject two family planning measures.
Senate Bill S784 is the latest effort to restore close to $7.5 million in funding for family planning—a line item Gov. Christie has stricken from the budget every year in office. Senate Bill S1203 would expand family planning under ObamaCare to “non-pregnant” individuals above 138%, and up to 200% of the federal poverty level.
“Lawmakers pushing these bills just don’t seem to want to face the reality that taxpayers are tapped out and cannot afford to fund these kinds of pet programs,” said AFP communications director Mike Proto, who testified against both measures before the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee today.
“Everyone knows that we’re facing huge budget gaps for this year and next. The pension system remains in crisis. We’re being threatened every day it seems with another downgrade. Adding these kinds of discretionary costs is just fiscally irresponsible.”
“Sooner or later, New Jersey will have to foot more of the bill for the expansion. The federal government will not pay 90% of the costs for eternity,” continued Proto. “Does anyone really think legislators kick people out of the system when the federal government lowers its match to 50% or less or doesn’t help pay for this at all?”
Proto also raised the question of the legality of Bill S1203.
“ObamaCare requires every citizen to purchase comprehensive coverage, yet this bill does not accomplish that. Assemblywoman Casagrande noted this when the bill came up in committee on the Assembly side. The administration has also voiced similar concerns. It just makes no sense to enact legislation that will invite litigation and is likely to be overturned in the courts.”
“And certainly the last thing we should be doing is furthering the disastrous, unpopular, unaffordable health care takeover.”
