Dear House Ways and Means Chairman Camp,
On behalf of more than two million Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I write to express our strong opposition to extending the wind production tax credit (PTC). We are encouraged by your decision to exclude this handout for the wind energy industry from the tax reform discussion draft you introduced earlier this year. We encourage your continued opposition to extending the PTC as your committee considers tax extenders legislation.
Wind energy receives an enormous amount of subsidy for very little production compared to other forms of electricity generation. Currently, eligible wind power projects receive $23 per megawatt-hour of electricity produced. Of the total federal financial support for electric power, 42 percent went to wind power in 2010, even though it generates only 2.3 percent of our electricity nationwide.
American taxpayers and ratepayers have seen little return on this forced investment in wind energy over the past 20 years. We see wind power continue to break its promises of long-term job creation, economic activity, and affordability. Americans deserve energy solutions that are economically viable—not ones that rely on government subsidy indefinitely.
We urge you to be bolder than the Senate Finance Committee in standing up to special interests in the wind energy industry. We encourage you and your colleagues to reject efforts to extend the PTC. Thank you for your leadership on the issue, and we look forward to working with you.
