Arlington, VA – With the World Trade Organization (WTO) Appellate Body effectively crippled today due to an insufficient quorum, Americans for Prosperity called on the administration and all WTO member countries to agree to the reforms necessary to revitalize the tribunal.
AFP Trade Policy Fellow Dan Pearson issued the following statement:
“We now know it’s possible to shut down the WTO Appellate Body. What’s more interesting will be to see whether leaders of the United States and other WTO member countries will show the wisdom, creativity, and perseverance needed to get it running again. Our proposal provides a roadmap for improving and reinvigorating the Appellate Body. We urge WTO member countries to adopt and implement it, thus preserving the rights and obligations embedded in the Uruguay Round. Making dispute settlement enforceable once again will help to increase business certainty, thus undergirding the global economy and the millions of jobs that depend on trade.”
