AFP: There is Nothing Fair About Government Picking Winners and Losers

Sep 18, 2018 by AFP

Arlington, VA – As the Trump administration continues to escalate an already-harmful trade war with the announcement of additional tariffs on Chinese imports, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said this morning on CNBC that they were going “item by item” to pick which products would be impacted by the new round of tariffs and which would receive exemptions.

AFP President Tim Phillips issued the following statement:

“In an effort to address China’s unfair trade practices, we’ve not only harmed our own workers and consumers, but we’ve also empowered DC bureaucrats to crush or save industries of their arbitrary choosing. There’s nothing fair about a government bureaucrat picking winners and losers based on their view of which industries and products are important to people and which ones aren’t. That isn’t how we built the American economy, and it certainly isn’t how we’ll be able to expand it. The only equitable way to drive our economy forward is to reach a zero-tariffs goal and eliminate all trade barriers.”
