AFP: Senate Passage of Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is a Win for Middle Class

Dec 20, 2017 by AFP

Arlington, Va. – Americans for Prosperity is commending Republicans in the U.S. Senate today for passing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which delivers important tax relief to families and businesses alike. AFP made pro-growth tax reform its top federal priority this year, and engaged its grassroots network in 36 states to rally support for final passage.

AFP President Tim Phillips had this to say:

“Today’s vote is a victory for hardworking families looking to keep more of their own paychecks, and American businesses who have been forced to compete under an unfair system. Senators passing this pro-growth plan deserve enormous credit for taking on the challenge of reforming our tax code, made possible by unifying around a shared vision of helping people improve their lives.

“At AFP, tax reform has been our top federal priority. Our grassroots activists have been heavily engaged all year long, making hundreds of thousands of calls and door knocks supporting tax reform, or attending one of the 80 townhall events we held across the country.

“After nearly a decade of stagnation, this plan puts us on track for the kind of sustained economic growth that has the ability to lift up American families and generate new opportunity in every sector of business.”

BACKGROUND:

Americans for Prosperity, along with Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, made tax reform its top federal priority this year. Together, the groups leveraged the grassroots capabilities of network partners, including the LIBRE Initiative and Generation Opportunity, and lead a broad coalition of policy partners from across the country to develop and promote AFP’s  Vision for Comprehensive Tax Reform.

AFP’s 36 state chapters held more than 75 grassroots events throughout the summer and fall, which saw the organization partner with local communities, elected officials and policy experts to highlight the beneficial impact of comprehensive tax reform.

AFP and other grassroots leaders hosted press conferences throughout the year with major stakeholders in the tax reform debate such as Rep. Meadows and Senators Perdue, Tillis and Heller, in addition to holding events with White House Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and White House Legislative Affairs Director Marc Short in support of tax reform. These gatherings were crucial to fostering unity and momentum in Washington for this once-in-a-generation opportunity to unrig the economy.

As tax reform faced significant threats from special interests and lobbyists, AFP mobilized to defeat harmful provision like the misguided border adjustment tax (BAT) and, more recently, an automatic tax hike trigger proposed by some Senate Republicans.

In Washington, the group’s government affairs team advanced AFP’s vision in over 1,000 meetings with congressional leaders and assembled more than a robust group of coalition partners in support of tax reform. The group also issued key vote alerts to hold lawmakers in the House and Senate accountable for crucial efforts to advance tax reform.
