AFP Ramps Up Ad Buy: Time to Fix Our Broken Tax Code

Grassroots group is urging Senators to champion pro-growth tax reform.

Arlington, Va. – Americans for Prosperity announced they were expanding the scope of a several-hundred-thousand-dollar ad effort to advance pro-growth tax reform. The group had previously announced they were targeting members of the House Ways & Means committee encouraging them to support AFP’s plan to un-rig the economy. Today, several Senators are also being targeted with this message: “It’s time to fix our broken tax code.” AFP said they are investing in the ads because Americans deserve better economic growth, a corporate tax rate that’s competitive with other countries, and a fairer system that weeds out cronyism and corporate welfare.

Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips released the following statement:

“We’re determined to make sure tax reform is on top of Congress’ priority list. Broad, pro-growth tax reform is possible this year, but it will require champions in both the House and the Senate rallying around a set of fundamental principles – making the tax code fairer and simpler for all. We’ll continue to invest and mobilize our grassroots infrastructure to show lawmakers the support that’s out there for these principles. There’s an incredible appetite among the grassroots and the public to get Washington to un-rig the economy. We believe we can achieve a tax system that offers everyone the same opportunity, a corporate tax rate that’s more competitive with foreign countries, and a system that promotes more substantial economic growth rather than stagnation.”

The heavy six-figure investment on digital platforms is the start of a comprehensive effort to push for broad, pro-growth tax reform all summer. The organization and partner groups recently committed to investing at least seven figures to stand up for lawmakers who back their five-principles of tax reform, and encourage more of them to do the same.

AFP said it would spend several hundred thousand dollars on digital advertising, and follow it with more investments like direct mail, door-to-door visits, and other grassroots action around the country.

Leaders of the grassroots organization identified the five key principles they view as critical to a strong tax-reform plan:

  1. Simplicity: Lower rates, fewer brackets, and the elimination of special loopholes, deductions, and exemptions will make tax compliance easier and more affordable.
  2.  Efficiency: A broad-based, low-rate tax system is the most efficient way for the government to collect revenue—causing as little disruption to the economy as possible.
  3.  Equitability: Corporate welfare and special-interest handouts in the current tax code create an unfair, two-tiered tax system and should be eliminated.
  4.  Predictability: Tax certainty is essential to a pro-growth tax system.
  5.  No Burden on Taxpayers: Comprehensive tax reform must be done without placing new burdens on the American people.
