AFP-PA Applauds Lawmakers for Voting Against Budget ‘Deal’

Feb 9, 2018 by AFP

Harrisburg, Pa. – Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania (AFP-PA) on Friday thanked Senator Pat Toomey and Representatives Scott Perry, Keith Rothfus, Lloyd Smucker, Bob Brady, and Brendan Boyle for voting against the two-year budget, the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018. This deal blows up spending caps enacted by the Budget Control Act of 2011 and massively increases spending by over $300 billion over the next two years, which could amount to $1.7 trillion in higher spending over ten years.

“This is a ‘back to business-as-usual’ budget, and we expected better. Just two months ago Congress passed historic tax reform to unrig the economy and give Americans a pay raise, but now Congress is threatening to undermine that progress with this vote,” said AFP-PA State Director Beth Anne Mumford. “The budget process has been a mess for years, but this agreement represents the worst of congressional logrolling, with both sides extracting billions in spending concessions from the other and leaving taxpayers on the hook. We thank Senator Toomey and Representatives Perry, Rothfus, Smucker, Brady, and Boyle for standing up for Pennsylvania taxpayers, standing up to special interests, and rejecting this bill.”

Background:

Americans for Prosperity, Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, The LIBRE Initiative, Generation Opportunity, and Concerned Veterans for America sent a letter to congressional leaders earlier this week announcing their opposition to the government spending bill. The organizations argue that the so-called bipartisan budget agreement undermines the historic progress made by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.
