AFP-MN Urges Lawmakers to Support Medicaid Work and Training Requirements

Mar 28, 2018 by AFP

St. Paul, MN – Americans for Prosperity-Minnesota (AFP-MN) today sent a key vote letter urging the members of the House Health and Human Services Finance Committee to support HF3722, a measure to allow Minnesota to submit a waiver request to the U.S. Department of Health to institute a work requirement for able-bodied, childless, working-age adults on Medicaid.

AFP-MN has launched a digital ad urging the members of the House Committee to support HF3722.

“Under Obamacare, Medicaid has robbed able-bodied, working-age adults of the dignity of earned success by dis-incentivizing work and higher earnings, lest they lose eligibility and thus benefits,” said AFP-MN State Director Jason Flohrs. “Implementing a flexible work requirement is an immediate solution lawmakers can deploy to uplift struggling Minnesotans who, like all people, deserve the dignity of earned success, while also beginning to provide the necessary relief to state taxpayers.”

Medicaid is the largest single item in the state budget, consuming nearly a third of the budget – and growing. The expansion of Medicaid to able-bodied, childless, working-age adults is crowding out the availability of these services to more vulnerable individuals for whom Medicaid was intended such as the elderly, the disabled, and pregnant women.

Absent reform, this budget-buster will lead to cuts to these programs, cuts to Medicaid services, drastic and painful tax increases, or some combination thereof.
