AFP-MI: Right-to-Work Repeal Will Take Michigan’s Economy Backwards

Jan 11, 2023 by AFP

Lansing, Michigan—The Michigan chapter of Americans for Prosperity issued the following statement from AFP-MI State Director Annie Patnaude in response to policy priorities laid out today by Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks and House Speaker Joe Tate.

“Depriving private-sector union members of the freedom to choose whether or not to join a union will harm Michigan workers and also create a chilling effect for businesses that want to invest in our state. Those who work in the private-sector will have less freedom than public-sector employees who currently enjoy this right.

“In 2021, Michigan began to lose population again, we ranked top in the country for small business closures and 6th for outbound moves. Our state and national economy are at a critical juncture, yet the labor policy agenda laid out by legislative leadership will result in an economic one-two punch that lacks consensus among Michigan voters.”

Background

This year, AFP-MI will be ramping up its in more than a dozen state legislative districts with a multi-media issue advocacy effort and boots-on-the-ground to encourage lawmakers to uphold right-to-work freedom in Michigan.
