AFP LAUNCHES ADS AGAINST PROGRESSIVE TAX IN ADVANCE OF STATE OF STATE ADDRESS
Calls on Governor to Abandon Push for Another Tax Hike
NAPERVILLE – Today, Americans for Prosperity- Illinois released ads in advance of the Governor’s State of the State address encouraging Governor Quinn and Democratic legislators to abandon efforts to raise taxes, yet again, on Illinois taxpayers in the form of the progressive income tax. Americans for Prosperity is also urging Illinoisans to sign a petition opposing the Progressive Income Tax.

“The progressive income tax being advocated by Governor Quinn and legislative leaders will raise taxes on most Illinois taxpayers and make our state even less attractive to employers and families, worsening Illinois’ fourth-highest in the nation unemployment rate,” said AFP- Illinois State Director David From. “These ads highlight how Illinois cannot afford this job-killing policy and encourage residents to let their elected leaders know they want more good jobs, not higher taxes.”
The ad highlights how Illinois’s economy is being held back by high taxes and urges viewers to contact their legislators and tell them to vote against the progressive income tax.
The proposed amendment to the Illinois Constitutional amendment to scrap the state’s flat income tax and implement a progressive one is supported by Governor Quinn and many Democratic lawmakers. Last week, Democratic Sen. Linda Holmes (D-Aurora) accurately identified one of the problems with a progressive income tax while voicing her opposition, saying “the progressive income tax would begin to affect lower wage earners.” (Naperville Sun, January 21, 2013) Also last week, the non-partisan Tax Foundation noted the tax rates publicly put forth by House amendment sponsor Naomi Jakobsson (D-Champaign) would precipitate Illinois’ continued downward spiral to 44th on their “State Business Tax Climate Index,” already down fourteen places to 31 since before the historic, 67 percent tax hike.
The AFP- Illinois ads, timed to coincide with Gov. Quinn’s State of the State address, will initially run on cable television in the Springfield market as well as on TV in the 46th Representative District (Conroy), the 79th Representative District (Cloonen), and the 84th Representative District (Kifowit).
“Illinoisans are sending record amounts of tax revenue to Springfield, yet state government is still a fiscal mess,” continued From. “Having failed to reform government spending or improve the business climate, now these politicians see this next tax hike as a potential bailout for their failed policies. Our organization is committed to fighting that anti-taxpayer agenda.”
