AFP Key Votes Against Resolution to Undermine Donor Privacy

Dec 11, 2018 by AFP

Group says vote NO on passage of S.J. Res. 64, which would undermine IRS’ Schedule B fix.

ARLINGTON, Va. – Americans for Prosperity issued a Key Vote Alert on Monday, urging members of Congress to vote NO on passage of S.J. Res. 64, which would effectively nullify recent improvements to Internal Revenue Service Rules that help protect sensitive donor information from being leaked improperly. A spokesman said the grassroots organization would consider this vote as it evaluates where members of Congress fall on critical issues.

The IRS announced in July 2018 that it would adopt a new rule eliminating the requirement that certain non-profit organizations share the names and personal information (like home addresses) of their donors on a form submitted to the federal government.

AFP Chief Government Affairs Officer Brent Gardner said in part:

“Multiple government officials have recognized that the IRS has no need for this continued collection of donor names and addresses. If that information is needed for the purposes of an examination, the IRS can simply ask for the information directly…If this resolution passes, it would maintain an unnecessary regulation that does not assist in the enforcement of tax regulations and endangers donor privacy.

“We are committed to enhancing government transparency, protecting the privacy of American citizens, and the freedom of association enshrined in the Constitution. S.J. Res. 64 fails on all of these fronts.“
