AFP KEY Vote: YES on the CO-OP Consumer Protection Act and YES on Regulatory Relief for Small Business, Schools, and Nonprofits Act

Sep 27, 2016 by AFP

Dear Representatives:

On behalf of more than 2.8 million Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I write to urge you to vote YES on Rep. Adrian Smith’s H.R. 954, CO-OP Consumer Protection Act of 2016, and YES on Rep. Walberg’s H.R.6094, Regulatory Relief for Small Businesses, Schools, and Nonprofits Act.

We urge you to vote YES on Rep. Smith’s H.R. 954, CO-OP Consumer Protection Act, and YES on Rep. Walberg’s H.R. 6094, Regulatory Relief for Small Businesses, Schools, and Nonprofits Act. Americans for Prosperity will include both of these votes in our congressional scorecard.

These two bills are meaningful efforts in pushing back on President Obama’s regulatory agenda. The individual mandate under Obamacare and the Department of Labor’s recently-finalized overtime rule both have a direct and significant impact in the daily lives of American families and businesses throughout the economy.

Many Americans have lost their health insurance plans due to the closure of co-ops created under the law. Rep. Smith’s H.R. 954, the CO-OP Consumer Protection Act, will exempt them from paying penalties under the individual mandate. Those who lost coverage due to Obamacare’s unstable co-ops have already been harmed by the president’s healthcare law. A vote for this bill will protect these struggling Americans from facing additional penalties under the law, and make clear that lawmakers intend to put the well-being of Americans ahead of preserving the president’s healthcare legacy.

The DOL’s overtime rule make it more difficult for workers to move up the economic ladder. Research from the Mercatus Center at George Mason University shows that employers will face a high cost of compliance and workers will face reduced hours, lower overall compensation, and less flexibility. Rep. Walberg’s H.R. 6094, Regulatory Relief for Small Businesses, Schools, and Nonprofits Act, will delay implementing this job-killing regulation for six months.
