AFP Key Vote: YES on Free Speech Bill

Jun 13, 2016 by AFP

Dear Representatives:

On behalf of more than 2.8 million Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I urge you to support H.R. 5053 which would repeal the requirement that compels tax exempt organizations to file a Schedule B (Contributions Schedule) as part of their Form 9900 Annual Information return.

We urge you to vote YES on H.R. 5053 to protect Americans’ right to free speech and to protect against continued abuse from the IRS. Americans for Prosperity will include this vote in our congressional scorecard.

For years, American taxpayers have witnessed first-hand how the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) uses different tactics to target organizations based on their ideology. This rogue agency has intentionally denied or slowed conservative organizations’ applications for tax-exempt status and selectively applied the federal gift tax to individuals’ contributions to nonprofit organizations. In many recent instances, the IRS has illegally released organizations’ Schedule B donor information, despite its statutory confidentiality.

Disclosing donor information violates the First Amendment right to freedom of speech for organizations and the people who contribute to them. H.R. 5053 will prohibit the IRS from collecting the identity of donors who contribute to tax-exempt organizations, protecting taxpayer identity and stopping the IRS from similar targeting in the future.

We urge you to vote YES on H.R. 5053 to protect Americans’ right to free speech and to protect against continued abuse from the IRS. Americans for Prosperity will include this vote in our congressional scorecard.
