Dear Representatives:
On behalf of more than 3.2 million Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I write to urge you to vote YES on House Amendment #270, introduced by Reps. Gaetz and Khanna, to the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, which limits the unauthorized use of military force against Iran.
We urge to vote YES on House Amendment #270 to the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act. Americans for Prosperity will include this vote in our congressional scorecard.
One of Congress’ most important constitutional powers is to authorize the use of military force and to declare war. In recent year years, the Legislative branch has too often abdicated this responsibility to the Executive branch. Congress must reassert its Article I role in approving military force in order to ensure that our country fights only the wars necessary to keep us safe. The 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force was signed into law 18 years ago in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks in order to punish its perpetrators. Less than a fifth of the Congress that voted on the 2001 AUMF is in office today—fewer still could imagine that it would be invoked for over 41 operations in 19 countries, far beyond its original scope, let alone to initiate an ill-considered war with Iran.
Although Iran is a bad actor in the Middle East, those pushing for military intervention have failed to demonstrate an immediate threat to America’s vital security interests and ignore the unintended costs and consequences of open-ended conflict. With Iranian proxies actively engaged in conflict with Al Qaeda affiliates, justifying war through the 2001 AUMF is an insufficient basis for an unwise conflict. Amendment #270 still allows President to repel any immediate threats to US personnel, while blocking funding to carry out new offensive, unauthorized strikes on Iran. The costs of war are too high not to warrant robust Congressional debate as the Constitution demands.
We urge to vote YES on House Amendment #270 to the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act. Americans for Prosperity will include this vote in our congressional scorecard.
