Dear Senators:
On behalf of millions of Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I write urging you to vote “No” on S. 2657, the American Energy Innovation Act.
We urge you to vote NO on S. 2657, the American Energy Innovation Act. Americans for Prosperity will include this vote in our congressional scorecard.
This legislation picks winners and losers among energy technologies and crowds out consumer-driven market innovation. It incorrectly presumes that Congress or federal employees in Washington, DC are better positioned to select or predict future energy demands than American citizens.
Consumers have benefited from recent trends toward energy dominance, affordability, and private sector innovation. These trends demonstrate that this legislation reflects recycled policies of the past and are more likely to trade-off with market-driven changes and basic R&D investments. Innovators and entrepreneurs – not government favors to politically preferred companies or industries – are the engine of technological progress.
In addition to the bill’s provisions to repeal certain requirements and reports (Title III) and expedite approval of exports for liquefied natural gas (section 1802), reducing unnecessary red tape and simplifying the tax code are common sense measures and a better path to the energy and environmental goals of the legislation that could bring the technological innovations this legislation wants to promote. Senators should provide a framework for innovators to test and market their ideas more quickly without being muzzled by complex and outdated regulatory barriers anchored in antiquated premises from the past century.
The future of American innovation does not rest on government programs that assume they can foresee which are the technologies that are going to win the day. Lawmakers should recognize that the best way to promote innovation is by fostering responsible public policy that supports openness to new ideas and products and removes barriers for inventors and entrepreneurs.
We urge you to vote NO on S. 2657, American Energy Innovation Act. Americans for Prosperity will include this vote in our congressional scorecard.
